It was a big day for mHub on Monday, January 23rd, 2017 because they hosted World Bank Africa’s Vice President Mr. Makhtar Diop, Country Director for Malawi Bella Bird and Country Manager for Malawi Laura Kullenberg. The Vice President of World Bank wanted to interact with the 50 youths that came that day. There was a roundtable discussion where youth entrepreneurs were able to have a Question and Answer session with the World Bank VP. An entrepreneur Wiza Jalakasi, whom also operates his Start-Up from mHub, asked the VP how much funding the World Bank has put aside for youths in Malawi in the upcoming programs. The theme for the event was Youth Entrepreneur and it began with a video from a young innovator by the name of William Kamkwamba who harnessed the wind by building a wind turbine to power a few electrical appliances in his family’s home. Young artists and poets also graced the stage from Q. Malewezi, Lily Banda and a musical performance from George Kalukusha. Makhtar Diop was born in Dakar in June 1960. He served as Minister of Economy and Finance in the second government of Moustapha Niasse. In 2012, Mr. Diop became staff member as Vice President of the World Bank of Africa. Mr. Diop left the youth with a quote that every entrepreneur should never forget. “Without a dream, you can’t have vision”. Young Malawians also made sure that the VP didn’t leave empty handed by giving him two gifts; one of which was presented by Jethro Longwe, a painting called the Royal Dance and a book presented by mHub’s Christine Mhone autographed by all of the youth that attended called The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind: Creating Currents of Electricity and Hope written by Bryan Wealer and William Kamkwamba. Everyone young and old enjoyed the event and surely hope this isn’t the last time to see Mr. Diop.
