The Girls for Code is one of the mHub's initiative aiming at equipping girls with diverse ICT skills which includes programming (block programming, mobile application development and website development, photography, graphic designing). The girls are trained using MIT App Inventor to develop mobile appllications, HTML and CSS to develop websites.
MIT App Inventor is a language used for learning and teaching how to program mobile apps. Refined versions of tutorials from MIT App Inventor sites and Google are used. From App Inventor's inception, thousands of beginners have used them to learn programming and learn App Inventor.
HTML is Hyper Text Transfer Markup Language
CSS is Cascading Style Sheets.
The program has been up and running for more than 2 years and has managed to reach out and get 1000 girls interested in the innumerable disciplines that incorporate STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). The Girls4Code program has recently co-joined the Girl Up club with which common interests are shared of empowering the girl child.
Two girls form the Girls4Code club, Rabecca Saeluzika Mzungu and Shreya were part of the group members that represented Malawi at the Global Robotics Competition thus part of the group that also built the robot, This was a global competition that was held in the United Statesof America, Washington DC and it was based on the theme "ACCESS TO CLEAN WATER ". It had about 158 countries participating and 168 teams in total of which Team Malawi built a robot that locates, filters and store water and were in Top 10.
